Norman Kid’s Magazine – Is your picture in it?

***While I feel bad about posting all this without proper credit – it was done in an effort to educate bloggers to find their own pictures and if they want to pursue with the publication, they can – there is no malicious intent meant or implied*****

Here’s the online version link so you can see ALL the photos, even those not included here:  Norman Kid’s Mag

This is an unexpected post. Top Girl was in the physician’s office yesterday and picked up a copy of our local newspaper’s newest magazine. She recognized my friend’s photo right away with no credit, no link, nothing. I emailed and asked if she had given permission…….nope. As Top Girl and I went through the magazine, she recognized many many photos as being used without credit or link. Her secret is that she is a Pinterest addict! Anyway, I didn’t want to do a search of every single picture but I felt an obligation to my fellow bloggers –  so I have scanned the bulk of what we believe to be content used without permission and the last page shows how to contact the editors of the newspaper and magazine. Please share this post with all your friends and anywhere you think a blogger may see their own work. If you recognize a picture as a blogger’s whose posts you regularly read, please contact them with this link and give them a chance to decide if they want to pursue the issue or not. There’s no way to take this content “down” because it is in big glossy magazines all over our county.

If you thought copy and pasting pictures was not illegal because it’s on the Internet – please click on the following 2 links and read about  1 blogger and 1 company  who had to pay thousands to settle out of court for using photographs that were not theirs!

Roni Loren’s Story.

The Content Factory took a picture of Nebraska from someone and they are really ticked off that they had to pay several thousand dollars because of it.

Please look at the photos and share share share! They are in PDF files so no one can change them. There are 7 pages.

My friend said the editor offered her a paltry sum for using her photos – here’s the owner of the Norman Transcript (located in Norman Oklahoma)  Please feel free to contact the owners if you get no help from the editor:

I’m a new subscriber so please pardon my ignorance, but Who is “Top Girl”?

Hi Dave – no problem (you should know I generally stick to recipes) But my husband, children, and grandson never asked to be on the blog so I use made up descriptions. Mr. Picky Eater is my husband, Top Girl is my daughter (our oldest), Lawyer Boy is our middle child (self-explanatory), Our youngest is Wonder Boy, our daughter in law is married to Lawyer boy and her name is Minnie Mouse, Son-in-law is Top Girl’s husband and Rocket is our grandson. Sorry for the confusion!

Hey there! Long time no see.
Thanks for bringing this subject to the forefront. I believe we would like to think that most folks and businesses give credit and compensation to bloggers when due, but I’m afraid stealing pictures and content happened way too often. Thanks for blowing the whistle on this one- we’ve gotta watch out for each other!
    Cheers!

Hey girl! It’s wonderful to see your icon! Thank you so much for being supportive. It’s appalling that a newspaper – people who went to Journalism school and have probably felt the pain of having articles and photos stolen in the past – would actually not only use photos without permission but then basically tell someone who contacted them to “shove off”! Still, it’s glad to talk with you! Please come back often!

I guess they thought no one would put the time, energy, and money into pursuing it. It’s a really sad commentary on what passes for professional journalism today.

Hi Kelly, I just had a friend of mine forward me this link. The images taken for the cover and content of this magazine as far as the Halloween costumes and content is concerned, is mine. I am the one who took those pictures. The editor contacted me and asked me to that them. I have done several publications for her since then and have given her full permission to print these. She actually does reference my name in the front of the magazine in every issue…and in the content. I put a lot of time and effort in my work and I actually have had people steal my images cut off my watermark and use them as their own and you are right. It is against the law…but in this particular case that did not happen. Now maybe in other parts of the mag it did, but I have developed a close relationship with the editor and she seems to give credit where credit is due.

Hi Brittany – it’s nice that yours were not stolen but other friends of mine did have theirs stolen from this article, so no, she is not giving credit where it is due if it become more difficult than calling across town. My friend Becca, a blogger in Wisconsin owns and did not give permission for 2 of the photos – and that is why the article remains on my blog. Another friend who lives in a foreign country owns and was not asked permission to use another photo………so while you had a good experience, others did not.
