Cherry Dump Cake – Kellis Kitchen

Last night we ate and then we wanted something quick and sweet to eat so I went to the pantry to see what we had and we had just the perfect dish in an hour:  Dump Cake!  Have you ever had any or made it?  YUM!!  I’m going to show you how to make here in a just a minute but first do you remember when I participated in the Thrift Challenge from Something To Be Found?  I know many of you were kind enough to go vote for me.  Well, my prizes arrived today!  Look that the beautiful sign she made out of a cabinet door and the Pom Garland in University of Kansas colors – I just love that.  I must find the perfect place on my alma mater shelf to display that one.  You will be seeing that sign in many of my upcoming recipe photographs, that’s for sure!  What do you think?  Isn’t Kate talented?

I love the concept of this cake… LOVE it! But I tried it once and was so disappointed. There was dry cake mix that never got wet from the butter and it never sank into the cake either. It just kinda sat there on the top. Weird…. I ended up brushing it off with a pastry brush, but I never tried making another one.
What did I do wrong?? Tell me, oh wise dump cake baker!

Hmmmm……….I don’t know. Most recipes call for 1 can of pie filling but I put in 2 and it spreads much better adding more “juice” so why don’t you try that and see how it works? Bet you it will be better then.

I agree on the two cans of pie filling. I recently made it in a Dutch oven over a fire while camping and it turned out wonderful! Try chocolate cake with it too and it makes it just decadent as heck!

We made a similar cake when I was growing up, but used twice as much butter as you. You have to be so careful of today’s oleo too; some of it has too much water to use in cooking. Stick with butter!

I love the name of this cake, Kelli! I don’t usually buy yellow cake mix since my old faithful Good Housekeeping has an easy, one-bowl recipe but I imagine I could just mix together the dry ingredients and use them in place of the box. Ice cream looks essential, in this case.

Thanks Stacy! Honestly, my mother thought she was doing me a big favor last month when they had yellow cake mixes 88 cents each – she bought me 5! Gotta’ find some recipe for them! 🙂

Oh, this brings back memories. If we were having a family dinner at a particular aunt’s, this was always on the buffet table. Congrats and love the sign.

This recipe was handed down from my mom except she never dumped in crushed pineapple. I have since tried it with the crushed pineapple added to it and it is wonderful! I know it’s rich enough without it but we also drizzle a confectioner sugar glaze over the cake! So heavenly delicious!!!
