Sunday’s Redo – For My Daughter

I have always loved Mid Century Modern (MCM) and Sauder Furniture, most likely because I was surrounded by it as a child. When my daughter was born, she picked up my love as well. When she was in college, we lived in a small town of about 18,000 and the yard sales were fantastic! We went nearly every weekend and picked up fabulous items for little or nothing. One weekend we found this chair that was in bad shape but structurally sound. DD wanted it for her first apartment:

Time went on and about 2 years later, I found this matching footstool at a yard sale in the same town.

DD graduated and we both moved, separately, to the college town we currently live in. My husband and I moved into a house with lots of storage space where the chair and footstool were placed in the back and promptly forgotten. Until last fall when we began downsizing as DD married and SSP (Son Smarty-Pants) moved out for his last year of school. When we found it, we quickly moved it so she wouldn’t see it. My first intention was to recover it ourselves. But the hubs snapped out of it quickly and realized there was no way we could do that. I found an upholsterer who was willing to recover and rebuild the seat for $35. I had paid $8 and $3 for the chair and footstool respectively so $35 wasn’t a big investment. I also purchased a TV bed from TV Bed Store to save space in her bedroom. I went to fabricguru.com and purchased the upholstery material on clearance for $15. I had $61 in the entire thing. Here are the results:

Last weekend, my husband and I found this Bubble Lamp for $5 and it works just great!

We had some paint that matched the green in the chair so my husband painted it.

Now, it matches the chair and if I can get the hubs to give it up, it will look groovy with her chair and footstool! Hope you enjoy!

I am soooo jealous! I need to redo and do a lot of diy things when I move in with John and I will not have any help at all. Great job with the chair especially! It looks great!

Thanks! It took me 5 years to get this done so take your time. When it was finished the man who did it said it was worth about $1,500 now…totally worth it!

To find an upholsterer to rebuild and cover your chair for thirty-five dollars was amazing.
