Pork Steak Sandwiches from Kelli's Kitchen

It’s still in the 80’s here. Air conditioner is still on most of the time. October is the month in our state that the temperature fluctuates up and down the most. This fall, it’s more hot than cool. On Sunday, I wanted to have one more bar-b-q meal to end the summer. However, as it often does in Oklahoma – the wind was sweeping down the plains at about 30 miles per hour so we weren’t going to be at the grill! When I went to the store, pork steak was on sale. Sometimes you can get that so doggone cheap it’s hard to turn down but honestly, I never can make it a way I like and you know Mr. Picky eater – he doesn’t like much of anything. Oh yeah, and yes – it’s on my diet!

But this time, I decided to do a little something different. I went to my go-to homemade Bar-B-Q sauce recipe found here and mixed some up. We don’t like bottled sauce because it’s all too darn sweet and thick! We like ours a little lighter. So I threw the pork steak into the 8×8 pan (covered with Reynolds Wrap Pan Liner) and poured the Bar-B-Q sauce on top. Covered it with foil and place in the oven at 325F for 2 ½ hours. When I pulled it out, it looked like this:

And the Bar-B-Q sauce looked like this:

I pulled apart the meat and put it back in the pan and cooked for 30 minutes more, uncovered:

And then I served it on paper plates on hamburger buns – it was declared the best pork steak ever! And we’ll do it again!

That looks so delicious. We have our furnace on at night now in southwestern Ohio. The leaves are beautiful, though.

Lucky girl! Just the sumac (not sure I spelled that right) are turning bright red. Everything else? Green as green can be – but at least it’s not dead and brown like last year.

Oh, yum! I like my BBQ sauce lighter, too. Daniel loves the thick, dark, bottled kind, blah. He’ll eat whatever I make, though, with minimal complaining. I’m definitely going to have to look for some cheap pork steak and try this! Yuuum. You could probably do this in the crock, too!

And, I’m jealous. It’s been pretty cold here… although it does flux up to the 70-80s every now and then.

You could totally do it in the crock pot and if I wasn’t in a hurry – I would have put it in there! : )

Looks oh-so-delicious! I need to try this… perhaps in the crock pot.
Have you ever heard of or been to Cafe Rio (western US mexican restaurant)? They have the most delicious pork ever. You can find the recipe all over the internet (look up ‘Cafe Rio pork recipe’)- because everyone who has ever eaten there wants to copy it at home and impress their friends and family.
But don’t get feeling too fancy and gourmet when preparing it, there’s a can of coke on the ingredient list.

I’m going to look it up! I’ve never been to a Cafe Rio but I have heard of it – and yes, you can make this in the crockpot – I was just in a hurry and wanted it done in 3 hours. It will be great and I plan on making it that way next time! Thanks for the tip on the recipe.

This looks great, especially the homemade sauce. I recently went to a fiddle festival in Idaho, and these bikers were selling pulled pork from a whole pig they’d slow roasted in the ground for 24 hours. It blew my mind that they would go to all that effort, and then serve the meat with a store bought BBQ.

You know, my husband and I have decided we just don’t care for store-bought or even restaurant-purchased bar-b-q sauces – this one is light and not full of sugar! I have fiddlers in my family – mostly blue grass. Last weekend was the big blue grass festival up in Guthrie, Oklahoma and they were all there. I’ve been a few times – lots of fun!

I always make homemade sauce too, because I’ve lived too many places where store-bought is not an option and now, we just prefer it. Your pork looks melt-in-my-mouth delicious! I will definitely give this a try when we move next month and pork is once again available at the grocery store. Now I can’t wait!

We can get some pork but the selection is small and I have to go to a separate shop, nowhere near my normal shopping area. In Dubai, the groceries stores have a separate section for “non-halal” foods and the selection was pretty good when I was there “researching.” In fact, we had lovely pork chops for our first night there on the house hunting trip. If it weren’t for having to pack up this house full of stuff again, I would be thrilled to be moving. 🙂 Once the shipment is on its way, I can be happy!
