My nana was a wonderful woman who tried like the dickens to teach me to cook, iron, crochet and any number of other domestic arts. The only one she ever succeeded in was teaching me to can fruits and vegetables from the garden. Every once in a while I decide there was something she cooked that I want to make. As the domestically impaired person in our house, everyone groans and hope I lose interest before I injure myself or break something. Recently, I decided to make her most sumptuous chocolate pie with topping. Luckily, my daughter convinced her to share all our favorite recipes so we could carry on the tradition. The following is her recipe and while mine does not look as beautiful as hers, it tastes almost as good.
Everything you need for the pie:
Nana’s Chocolate Pie
1 deep dish pie crust – baked according to directions & cooled
1 ½ Cups Sugar
5 Tablespoons cocoa
4 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 Can (12 ounces) evaporated milk
4 egg yolks
1 teaspoons vanilla extract
4 Tablespoons butter or margarine
Directions
Put the pie crust in the deep dish and fork it like this:
Then bake the pie crust according to the directions.
In a bowl whisk together the cocoa and flour and set aside. In a separate bowl mix together milk, eggs, sugar, and vanilla. Pour the wet mixture into pot or double broiler. Put pats of butter or dollops of margarine around mixture where it will melt while cooking. Turn burner on Medium whisking constantly and bring to a boil.
Whisk in the flour and cocoa mixture and cook for 9-10 minutes or until it thickens into pudding.
Once it is thick enough, pour into the pie shell and allow to set for 10 minutes. It should look like this:
Nana used Dream Whip. I had to search in the store for it but this is what you will need to make her authentic pie:
Pour ingredients into bowl and turn the mixer on low until combined and then on high. Follow the directions to continue mixing until the Dream Whip is firm. It should look like this:
Spoon topping onto pie like this:
Then it will look like this:
If you prefer meringue then do this:
Using the 4 eggs whites from the egg yolks – put in the mixer and mix on high until stiff.
Mix 1/4 cup sugar after meringues are stiff and mix for another minute.
Spoon on and put in 350 F oven for about 10 minutes or until lightly browned.
I like it cold so I refrigerate for an hour or so and then I slice a piece. It will look like this, or maybe yours will look better. I could get mine to stand up better if I added gelatin but it doesn’t need it.
Ta-da! It doesn’t look bad and it tastes delicious. Hope you make it and if you do, let me know how it turns out.

Hmmm…this should be on my next baking expedition. I’ve done the chocolate brownies, cookies, cakes, cheesecakes but no pie yet. Wonderful idea! 😉

Chocolate cream pie is such a comforting dessert. I haven’t seen Dream Whip in years.

Neither had I but my nana used it on all cakes and pies. She didn’t care for merigue and Cool Whip had not been invented yet. Thanks for stopping by!

My Mom always made 2 {12 inch} chocolate pies and 1 {8 inch} lemon pie [this was for my Dad all the rest of the family liked chocolate. I always wondered by hers always tasted so much better than others. She finally told me her secret…..a teaspoon of malted milk powder. This recipe sounds so much like hers except for the malted milk.
Kelli
What a great idea! I’m going to try that next time. Thanks Billie!

Quick note. I am thinking that you should put your cocoa and flower through a sifter so as to not get lumpy in the pudding.
Kelli
Great idea! Why didn’t I think of that?!?!? Thank you Patti!

I put the sugar, flour and cocoa in the pan, stirred real good, then add the wet ingredients, it mixes together with no lumps. I also use a whisk.

This is like my moms was. I like the mirangue. I used to make them a lot when the kids were home. Mom made hers in an iron skillet. Bringing back great memories.
