How is your canning holding out this year? Mine is not doing too well. I canned
case after case of jam, jelly, pickles, peppers, salsa, and spaghetti sauce and we
are down to one small shelf that is 12 inches wide, 8 inches deep and about 14
inches high. My husband did not think he would like my spaghetti sauce and the
boys did not think they would like my salsa. But, they all did and we only have
one jar of salsa left and four jars of spaghetti sauce. Only one of the boys likes
jelly or jam along with my daughter. But extended family and friends gobble it up
like there is no tomorrow! I must say the strawberry was particularly good this
year. I have already begun to gather up jars for the spring and summer canning
season.
Yesterday was Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday as well as my mother’s. I
was off work so mom, daughter and I went on an adventure. We ended up at
an antique market in my hometown that I have visited for years. In one of the
booths, I spied 6 or so old-fashioned canning jars. I nearly fainted when I saw
the price on each one was $32!! Have you found antique canning jars to be
that expensive? I was completely shocked to say the least and backed away as
quickly as I could!
Mom has several new friends in the Land of Old, where she lives, so I have
started polling them asking if they have any old canning jars they want to get rid
of and if they will trade them for some jam/jelly in season. Heck, I don’t have any
to barter with right now!
